Explore the Bible Study: Victory

4:05 PM

Imagine that you are in the last minutes of the 4th quarter of a football game and you could win with one touchdown. You are backed up against your own end zone with the opposing team bearing down on you. You aren't sure what to do next. Then the coach says to you, "Don't be afraid, stand firm, you will win today!" How would you respond? In LifeWay's Explore the Bible Study: Victory, we get to observe and learn from the people of God as they dealt with being between the sea and their enemy with no where to go. They could only trust God.

I have expanded the study passages to include Exodus 14:10-31. The football analogy is carried throughout the study and it is suggested that you display a football or wear your favorite sports team jersey or cap as you introduce the session.

Some have debated about whether the parting of the sea is even possible. But, this isn’t about what we believe but about who God is! We know that God is the Creator and Controller of the seas. It is His, and He can choose to do with it as He pleases; we don’t have to understand it. God told Job something we should all remember if we struggle with how this could happen. God said, “Who enclosed the sea behind doors when it burst from the womb, when I made the clouds its garment and thick darkness its blanket, when I determined its boundaries and put [its] bars and doors in place, when I declared: "You may come this far, but no farther; your proud waves stop here"?  (Job 38:8-11, HCSB)

God has given us a demonstration of the possibilities recently through Hurricane Irma. When the storm came across Florida, all the water was sucked out of multiple bays along the Gulf Coast, leaving behind dry land. The media showed multiple scenes of people walking out on the land, some as far as a half-mile from the shoreline. The following video could be used to illustrate this:

When a football team is losing as they come into the fourth quarter, the coach can either give up or he can offer hope. Some of the greatest coaches will tell you that a team has to be a fourth quarter team. They can’t give up. One coach said this, “You can throw in the towel, or you can use it to wipe the sweat off of your face and keep going.” (unknown) There is a sign in some locker rooms that state, “Tough teams win in the 4th quarter.”

When the Israelites were cornered between the sea and their enemy, they didn't give up. They felt the pressure, but they stepped out in faith and obeyed. As believers, we too were once in an impossible situation. We were caught between the sea of sin and our enemy, death. The good news of the gospel is that God, through Jesus Christ, has defeated sin and death. This is why Christians are called to “fear not” and “stand firm in the faith.” We do have victory over any enemy or circumstance in Christ!
